Pond / Water Management project guide
Farm and recreation ponds, cleanouts, dams and drainage channels shaped to hold water and pass storms safely.
Key facts
Rules and figures that come up in nearly every pond / water management quote, with the public source for each one.
| Fact | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dam freeboard | NRCS Pond Standard 378 requires at least 1 foot of freeboard between the design high water and the top of the settled dam. | USDA NRCS, Conservation Practice Standard Pond (Code 378)As of September 2026 |
| Spillway crest separation | NRCS requires the auxiliary (emergency) spillway crest to sit at least 6 inches above the principal spillway crest on dams draining 20 acres or less, and 1 foot above on larger watersheds. | USDA NRCS, Conservation Practice Standard Pond (Code 378)As of September 2026 |
| Design criteria source | NRCS TR-210-60 sets the uniform design criteria most pond contractors follow for earth dams and spillways. | USDA NRCS, Technical Release TR-210-60 Earth Dams and ReservoirsAs of September 2026 |
Project guide
Pond and water management contractors excavate and shape ponds, build or repair the embankment dams that hold them, and cut the ditches, swales and channels that move water across a property. A pond that holds water starts with the soil: it needs a clay core or a compacted clay liner, or a synthetic liner where the ground is sandy or rocky, and the dam is built in compacted lifts with a keyway cut into the original ground. Every pond also needs a way to pass the big storm, usually a principal spillway pipe plus an emergency spillway cut in natural ground, sized for the watershed above it. USDA NRCS publishes free design standards for farm ponds that most contractors follow. Cleanouts, which remove years of silt and reshape banks, are common on older ponds and are priced by the cubic yard removed and where that muck can be spread.
GradeLine lists 2,936 pond / water management contractors.Compare their work and equipment, then confirm availability and service area before requesting a quote.
Listed businesses are based in Rock Hill, Bushyhead, Lansing, Rehoboth, Walnutport, Wayland, though most crews travel well beyond their home city.
Small ponds are usually priced per cubic yard excavated, about $2 to $6 in workable soil, so a half-acre pond commonly lands in the $5,000 to $25,000 range. Synthetic liners add $1 to $2 per square foot and imported clay can double the earthwork cost. Pond cleanouts run $3 to $8 per cubic yard of muck depending on how wet it is and how far it has to be moved.
Ranges are national and approximate; regional labor rates, material prices and site conditions move them in both directions.

Send a survey or aerial with the pond location, the size and depth you want, what feeds it, whether you plan to stock fish or irrigate from it, and where excavated material can be placed.
The main cost items are cubic yards of excavation and whether the on-site soil will hold water or a liner and imported clay are needed; dam height, spillway pipe and riser, drain valve, and pump or well components; where the spoil goes, erosion control on the fresh banks, and seeding or riprap to finish. A site visit helps the crew see which ones apply.
Ponds built in or near a stream, wetland or floodplain usually need a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 404 permit and state water quality certification. Dams over a set height or storage volume fall under state dam safety programs, and many counties require a grading permit for the earthwork.
Pick a state to see the pond / water management contractors listed there. Most crews travel well beyond their home city, so confirm the service area before requesting a quote.
